It was a great experience participating in the Girl Advocate for Gender Equality (GAGE) project and seeing young girls excited about being advocates to their Counterparts who have faced one societal stigmatization or the other especially as it concerns the girl child.
It was a two days event organized by Strong Enough Girls Empowerment Initiatives (SEGEI), Stand With a Girl (SWAG) and GAGE. The non-governmental organization played host to 36 amazing young damsels from the ages of 10 to 19, from the 6 geopolitical zones in Nigeria, who were also representatives of partnering NGO’s.
All participants arrived Ajuji green wich Hotel, central Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria on Thursday, 3rd June 2021.
It was an event/Training scheduled to last for 3 days where the selected teenage girls who emerged tops from a competition of short video entry. Everyone was ecstatic at the life changing step embarked upon with expectations and readiness shown by all who made it thus far.
The highlights of the event were special trainings and interactive session on the following areas
Girls Education
Innovation and Technology
Financial literacy
Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights/Gender based violence.
Female leadership.
The girls were taught on advocacy and how to be a GAGE Ambassador to other girls on gender inequality in the world today with special interest to their immediate community.
It was competitive and interactive session where ideas where shared and the future ambassadors, shared into project groups and public speaking practical session. This session enables them to teach and educate themselves on the above topics discussed
Pearlescent Foundation did not miss out in any of the actions, as they had in attendance an amazing and promising representative, Alaba Irene Harry who was awarded “Best Video presentation” at the selection process.
Alaba Irene Harry is girl child and a second born from a family of 4, who hails from Harry’s Town in the kalabari speaking region of Rivers State.
She is a science student at Community Secondary School, Rumudumaya in Obio Akpo local govt area, Port-Harcourt.
Miss Alaba Harry, a high spirited, Intelligent and result oriented ambassador of the Girl Child Advocacy specially picked by Pearlescent Foundation to spread the gospel on the beauty and future of the girl child to her community in Rivers State.
She is a 15 years old girl, first daughter and second born in a family of 4, who hails from Harry’s town in Rivers state. She is a science student at Community Secondary School, Rumudumaya. She is intelligent outspoken and fluent and ready to spread the good news to other young girls around her age on all that she was taught.
